Amazon Seller Account Requirements

 

Before we begin the registration process to open Amazon FBA seller account, make sure you have the following information ready.

  • Your contact information - This includes your legal business name, address, phone number etc.
  • Email address - You should create a designated email account for your business. You will frequently receive important emails from Amazon.
  • Credit card - You need a credit card with a valid billing address. If your card is not valid, Amazon will cancel your registration. If you don’t have a credit card, a debit card will also work.
  • Phone number - You will need to have your phone close by during the registration process for verification purposes.
  • Banking information - You will need to provide Amazon your bank’s routing and account number to set up direct deposit.
  • Tax identity information - Amazon is required by the IRS to collect and report your tax information. You will need to have either your company’s Federal Tax ID number or your social security number to register.

 

Amazon Selling Plans

You should also review and consider the selling plan that would best fit your situation. You have two options on Amazon, you can sell as an individual or sell under a professional account.

Amazon Individual vs Professional Account

Individual Accounts

You don't pay subscription fees with Individual seller accounts on Amazon. Individual plans are best for sellers who plan on selling fewer than 40 items a month. Keep in mind, although there is no monthly subscription fee, you pay $0.99 per sale as a fee to Amazon.

  • Best when selling under 40 units per month.
  • There could be other referral selling fee.
  • Allows you to work with a single listing.
  • Unable to list products not already on Amazon.
  • Some categories will be restricted.

 

Professional Accounts

Professional accounts are best for sellers who plan on selling more than 40 items per month. Under this account, you would pay a monthly subscription fee of $39.99 but no additional fees per sale.

  • Best for sellers doing 40 or more sales per month.
  • There are referral fees for your sales.
  • Able to create new product listings.
  • The ability to run marketing campaigns with PPC

 

Change Amazon Selling Plan

 

Here is how you change your selling plan from individual to professional on Amazon. To change back from professional to individual selling plans follow the same process.

 

Step 1. Log in to Seller Central and click 'Settings'

Step 2. In the 'Your Services' section, click 'Manage'.

Step 3. Find the 'Sell on Amazon' section and click 'Downgrade' to change from a professional account to individual. To change from Individual to professional click 'Upgrade'.

Step 4. Lastly, Amazon will ask you to verify. Click 'Proceed' and you are good to go.

 

How do I open an Amazon seller account?

To open your Amazon seller account follow these steps.

 

1. Go to Amazon Services.

 

 

2. Scroll down and click “Selling on Amazon.”

 

3. Choose between the two account options.

As mentioned before, the two selling plans differ in a few ways. With the individual selling plan, you pay $0.99 plus other selling fees per sale but no monthly subscription fee. With the professional account, you pay a monthly fee of $39.99 and other selling fees.

What Amazon refers to as “other selling fees” are largely determined by the size and weight of your products.

If you are just starting out or simply undecided on which plan to choose, you can always start out as an individual seller and upgrade to a professional account. You can also start with a professional seller account and downgrade to an individual seller account at any time.

Once you’ve decided on the selling plan, it is time to create your account.

 

4. Click ‘Create your Amazon account’.

Once you have entered your name, email and created a strong password, it is time to set up your Amazon Seller account.

 

5. Provide your legal name and agree to seller terms.

Under “Legal name” enter the name of your business if you have a pre-established business name. If you are registering as an individual seller, list your full given name. Make sure to agree to Amazon’s terms of service by clicking the “Seller agreement” box.

Next, you will have to provide Amazon with some information about your business.

 

6. Fill in your business information and verify by text or call.

On this page, you will need to provide:

  • Business address - It’s important that Amazon has an accurate address for your business, especially when dealing with returned products.
  • Business display name - This is a unique name to your specific business on Amazon. Your seller account is displayed to customers under this unique name in Amazon’s Marketplace.
  • Website URL -  Having a website for your products on Amazon has long-term strategic advantages but is not required. If interested you can check out those strategies in this The Last Amazon Course.
  • verify account - Amazon requires you to verify your identity to ensure you are not a bot. Input your phone number and choose “call” or “SMS (text)”. Amazon will send you a code to verify your number.

Once you successfully verify, proceed to the next page where you will set-up billing and payments.

 

7. Set up your billing and deposit methods.

On this page, you will need to provide Amazon your billing information. It is very important you sign up with a valid credit card or debit card. If your card is invalid Amazon will cancel your registration which you don’t want.

You will also need to provide Amazon your direct deposit information so they can pay you every 14-days. To do so, you would need your account number and banks routing number.

Once you complete the billing and direct deposit section,  proceed to the tax section.

 

8.  Provide Amazon your tax information

In this section, you will need to provide Amazon your tax information. When you press “Start”  (as pictured below), the registration process will briefly detour to a “Tax Information Interview” portal. This is where your tax information is submitted and verified.

 

9. Fill out tax information interview

Amazon is required by the IRS to collect your tax ID information so the IRS can be notified of any possible taxable earnings you have through your Amazon account.

The actual responsibility of paying your taxes is strictly yours, but Amazon is required to track and report if you been a revenue-collecting Amazon seller during the past tax year.

Tax Information Interview:

  1. Under “Who will receive income from Amazon or its subsidiary” choose if you are registering as an “individual” or “business”.
  2. Under “For U.S. tax purposes, are you a U.S. person?” answer “yes” or “no”.
  3. Under “Tax Identity Information” you will use your Social Security Number if you are registering as an individual. If registering as a business you would provide your Federal Tax ID or Employer Identification Number (EIN).
  4. Sign and submit your tax information as seen below. Make sure you click the “consent” checkbox.

Once you sign, Amazon gives you an option to “Save and Preview” your tax form. Your tax information will pop-up in a W-9 format with an option to print it. I recommend you print and save this form for your records.

Now that you are finished with the tax portion of the registration process, you are almost at the finish line.

 

10. Exit the tax interview.

Before exiting the interview portal, notice the “Pending Validation” notification message at the top of the page; as well as the “W-9 Form” on the right side of the page. Review your W-9 form to make sure your information is accurate.

You also have the option to change the delivery Preference for your tax form on this page. Amazon’s default method is to deliver the tax form electronically. If you would like a physical copy instead, you can request it by clicking “change delivery preference.”

Once you are ready to exit the tax section and proceed to the next step of the registration process.

 

11. Amazon Product Information

In the last step of the registration process, Amazon will ask you a few questions about your products. These are multiple-choice questions mainly consisting of “yes” or “no” answers.

After answering the questions about your products, Amazon will ask you to pick the “product categories” under which you plan on selling your products.  If you are unsure, not to worry; you can always add or edit your choices later or even completely skip this section for now by clicking “skip for now.” 

Click “Finish” at the bottom of the page.

Before you can start using your Amazon seller account and selling products, there is one final step that requires your attention.

12. Two-Step Verification

Once you are done registering, Amazon will require you to enable Two-Step Verification before you can access your account. 

 

To enable the Two-Step Verification:

1. Click “Enable Two-Step Verification”

2Add a backup verification method

Backup verification methods are essential because you might not always have access to your preferred verification method. Amazon gives you two options for a backup: verify by “phone number’ or using an “authenticator app”

I recommend using the “Authenticator App” as your backup method for verification. This way you are able to verify your account even with no cell service. Instead of a code being texted to you every time you sign in, you simply scan the QR barcode on the screen and type in the code it generates.

After you type in the code, click “Verify code and continue.”

3. Turn on “Two-Step Verification

You are now ready to turn on two-step verification and access your Amazon seller account. Before you proceed make sure to look over the information on the “alternate sign-in method.”

Note: you can also click “don’t require codes on this browser” for your trusted devices. This will allow you to bypass having to type a code in every time you sign in on that specific device.

Lastly, click “Turn on Two-Step Verification”. You will be redirected to your store's backend dashboard or “Seller Central.”

 

Amazon Seller Account

Amazon Seller Central Dashboard

Amazon seller central is like home base for Amazon sellers. This is where you will add/track inventory, see all your orders and sales, as well as messages from customers. It is very important for you to familiarize yourself with the Seller Central dashboard along with its tools and resources.

 

First time logging into Seller Central

**It’s very important you follow this step directly after opening your Amazon seller account.

To finalize your account registration, Amazon will require you to sign in to Seller Central using a “One-Time Password”  on your FIRST time logging in after you register. This one-time password is also time-sensitive. You must use the code WITHIN 10 minutes of receiving the email.

If the code expires, simply reattempt to log in using your original password created during registration. This will generate another one-time password and automatically send it to your email account. Once you successfully log in using the one-time password, you good to use your original password moving forward.
